Job Announcement: Interim Executive Director Consultant – 29th Street Community Center (Baltimore, MD) The 29th Street Community Center is seeking an experienced and dynamic Interim Executive Director Consultant to lead the organization through a critical transition period. This role offers an opportunity for a highly skilled leader to stabilize operations, guide the organization through financial challenges, manage a capital project currently in progress, and strategize approaches for future sustainability. The Interim Executive Director Consultant will work closely with the board of directors to ensure the continuity of programs and services, while helping to lay the groundwork for the recruitment of the organization’s next permanent executive director. About the 29th Street Community Center The 29th Street Community Center is a cornerstone of the Harwood, Charles Village, Barclay, Waverly, and Abell neighborhoods in Baltimore City, providing essential programs and services to residents of all ages, races, and socioeconomic status. Our mission is to create a safe, supportive space where neighbors can come together to learn, grow, and thrive. We are proud to offer after-school programs, fitness classes, senior services, and a wide variety of community events. The Center is located adjacent to Barclay Elementary/Middle School (PS54, serving over 400 students pre-k to grade 8), a community school with strong ties to its surrounding neighborhoods. The school benefits from a wide variety of partnerships, led by Child First Authority, including Johns Hopkins University’s Whiting School of Engineering and the 29th Street Community Center. Barclay serves a multicultural population of diverse learners and families through culturally-informed programs and curricula. As we have seen across the landscape of community-based nonprofits, we are navigating a period of vacancies in leadership and financial uncertainty. With an ongoing capital project, the organization needs a strong and forward-thinking Interim Executive Director Consultant to lead during this pivotal moment. Key Responsibilities Stabilize Operations : Oversee day-to-day management of the organization, ensuring continued delivery of all programs and services. Financial Evaluation, Management, Planning, and Execution : Work closely with the board to evaluate and manage current financial challenges, create a development plan that will support financial sustainability of the organization through FY26, and execute those initial strategies for stabilization and growth during this transition period. Leadership Transition : Assist the board in the recruitment and selection of the next permanent Executive Director by providing insight and support throughout the process. Board Collaboration : Partner with the board of directors to develop and implement short- and long-term plans for the organization’s future. Staff Management : Lead and support existing staff, ensuring morale and productivity remain high during the transition period. Capital Project Oversight : Support the building committee and contracted owner’s representative providing leadership for the ongoing capital project, ensuring progress while keeping stakeholders informed and involved. Strategic Planning : Lead the development and refinement of the organization’s strategic direction, working with the board and staff to align program goals with community needs, enhance organizational effectiveness, and ensure long-term success. Qualifications and Experience The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and experience: Proven Leadership in Nonprofit Management : Experience in managing a nonprofit organization through periods of transition, particularly in challenging environments. Financial Acumen : Strong understanding of nonprofit financial management, including budgeting, forecasting, and financial strategy. Project Management : Experience overseeing capital projects, including coordinating with contractors, architects, and stakeholders. Change Management : Ability to provide stability and leadership during organizational change, while maintaining the trust and engagement of staff, board, and community members. Collaborative Mindset : A track record of working effectively with boards of directors, staff, volunteers, and community stakeholders to achieve organizational goals. Strategic Vision : Capacity to assess organizational and community needs through consultation with stakeholders, and to provide actionable recommendations to help guide the board in its search for the next permanent leader. Qualities Adaptable and Resilient : Able to thrive in a fluid, changing environment and handle multiple priorities with composure and clarity. Mission-Driven : Passionate about community building and making a positive impact in underserved neighborhoods. Strong Communicator : Skilled in clear and transparent communication with staff, board members, and the community. Decisive and Action-Oriented : Able to make informed, confident decisions while balancing the needs of the organization in the short and long term. Position Details Position Type : Full-time contractual Term of Employment : The term of the contract will default to six months and is extendable by three-month periods, as needed. Final determination will be made in collaboration with the selected candidate based on an agreed-upon scope of work. Location : Baltimore, MD (hybrid) Contractual Fee : The budget for this six-month contract is $40,000.
