DEFINITION
The Victim Advocate/Service Coordinator is responsible for providing informed advocacy services to victims of crime in applying for protection orders, court accompaniment, and support throughout prosecution. The Advocate will also provide information and facilitate access to resources, safety assessments, and safety planning services.

Examples of Duties
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Serve as a representative of the City of Mesquite, demonstrating a positive attitude and progressive actions through the display of professionalism, courtesy, and appropriate tact and discretion in all interactions with other employees and with the public.
  2. Provide liaison and coordinate between the Mesquite Police Department, City Attorney's office, and community resources.
  3. Contact victims and provide emotional support, guidance, information on criminal justice procedures, transportation, referral, and advocacy services to victims and the non-offending family members.
  4. Assist victims with filling out protective orders, Victim Compensation Forms, and other related paperwork.
  5. Accompanies victims to any court proceeding and to all interviews with prosecutors and defense attorneys or investigators.
  6. Consults with the City Attorney's office in regard case dynamics.
  7. Develop safety plans for victims based on initial and ongoing risk assessments.
  8. Maintain case records and prepare required reporting documents; track case status, case management, write reports, and other reporting as relevant.
  9. Collect and prepare monthly statistics for grant and research reporting.
  10. Participate and conduct activities such as trainings, consultation, and in community based committees or activities that relate to the essential functions.
  11. Educate and create community awareness about domestic violence, sexual assault, and new services being provided.
  12. Assist the City in overall service delivery by performing other administrative duties as delegated or required.

Experience, Education and Training:

Any equivalent combination of training, education and experience which provides the individual with the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:

Education: High School Diploma or GED. Associate's degree with an emphasis on social work or psychology. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university preferred with an emphasis on social work or psychology.

Experience: Experience with providing victims of crime with advocacy or providing advocacy service for victims.

NOTE : An equivalent combination of related training and experience may be considered.

Training: Speak and write Spanish fluently preferred.

License or Certificate: Must possess at the time of employment and continuously throughout employment a valid Nevada or "border state" driver's license per NRS 283.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed under the following conditions:

Duties require sufficient mobility to work in a typical office setting and use standard office equipment; sustained posture in a seated position for prolonged periods of time; vision to read printed materials and a VDT screen, and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone. Occasional physical exertion is present when bending, twisting, reaching, standing, walking and stooping. Must be able to handle occasional stressful situations and must carry/lift/push or pull loads up to 25lbs.

and from weapons; exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous materials and body fluids; risk of civil

cold temperatures.
