Position Summary:

Under the supervision of Prosecutor, provide criminal justice support and advocacy for victims of crime within tribal, federal, or state court when directed by Supervisors. All staff in the Prosecutor's office must adhere to mandated reporting laws. This is a grant funded position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide emotional support and advocacy services for victims of crime and their families, including assisting victims with filing applicable State of Michigan compensation forms and providing support to victims of crime throughout the legal process.
  • Provide 24/7 crisis counseling for victims and their families.
  • Assist with updating and maintaining monthly, quarterly, yearly contact(s) and program reports to Tribal Prosecutor and Victim Witness Coordinator; participate in weekly case supervision.
  • Refer individuals to community resources when necessary and assist clients accessing those resources when appropriate.
  • Provide transportation and advocacy to court proceedings in several jurisdictions.
  • Participate in tribal, local and state-wide task forces as it relates to position.
  • Perform data entry, filing, and Victim of Crime Program webpage.
  • Assist with the development and planning of community and Crime Victims' Rights Week events.
  • Provide education and outreach to community through occasional public speaking engagements.
  • Attend local, state and national training on the Victims of Crime to keep apprised of new trends and issues, as time permits and as resources allowed.
  • Must be willing to take direction from the Tribal Prosecutor and Victim Witness Coordinator of the VOCA Program in accomplishing assigned tasks.
  • Provide excellent customer service for all internal and external customers of the operations at all times. Provide solutions for customer concerns and continually focus on customer service as our top priority.
  • Must maintain strict confidentiality and present a positive, professional demeanor and image at all times.

Contacts/Purpose of Contacts:
  • Contact with victims to foster a sense of confidence and professionalism to all clients and to the tribal and surrounding community.
  • Contacts are with members of the organization, the community, local and federal law enforcement, SANE nurses, Child and Family Enrichment (CAF) tribal youth and members of the general public to include working with other court systems and communities regarding services available for those who have been victimized by crime.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, Law Enforcement Criminal Justice, Law or related field.
  • Counseling experience within Native American communities, including victims of crime counseling programs, or social work.
  • An equivalent combination of education and directly related experience may be considered.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
  • Experience with Native American cultures and traditions.
  • Must be able to pass background check to meet the employment eligibility requirements as they pertain to the position.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Substance abuse, law enforcement, or family counseling.
License, Certification, or Special Requirements:
  • Must have a valid Michigan Driver's License and must be able to obtain and maintain a Tribal Driver's License and qualify for coverage by SCIT auto liability insurance carrier.
  • Native American preference shall apply to all positions.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, county and local laws, regulations, and requirements.
  • Knowledge of basic case and records management procedures, court processes, and legal terminology.
  • Knowledge of principles and techniques of interviewing victims of crime.
  • Skill in analyzing problems, projecting consequences, identifying solutions, and implementing recommendations.
  • Skill in operating business computers and office machines, including Windows programs.
  • Ability to react quickly and make effective decisions in an emergency situation.
  • Ability to interact and maintain good working relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

Physical Demands:
  • Frequent use of hands, wrists, fingers associated with computer equipment.
  • Required to stand, sit and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Frequently required to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
  • Normal visual acuity, ability to talk and hear.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.

Work Environment:
  • Normal office, home and court environment.
  • May need to utilize additional safety precautions in the courtroom conducting potential dangerous proceedings.
  • Extended hours and irregular shifts required.
  • Travel may be required.
